A thousand kilometers from the Mediterranean, the desert city of Agadez is becoming an outpost of European migration policy. The nomadic Tuareg have been transporting people across the desert here for centuries - until new laws declare them to be smugglers. Germany and Europe are investing millions in local security, while the USA is deploying drones. But what good are border controls without economic prospects for the people? A mayor, a journalist and a trader tell the story - until a military coup in 2023 changes everything
In his documentary, Gerald Igor Hauzenberger sheds light on Europe's future security and migration policy, which will be decided in the city of Agadez in Niger. Agadez, once a transit point for migrants on their way north, has been transformed into a border post with transit camps thanks to EU support. However, the billions in financial aid have also led to unemployment and crime. The film raises the question of whether the Agadez region will become a successful example of innovative aid in Africa or whether it will develop into a geopolitical hotspot of flight and violence.
