Plea for the decriminalization of lifesavers
People seeking protection are not only stopped at Europe's external borders, pushed back or worn down in camps. Increasingly, they are also brought to court and imprisoned for helping others during their flight. Their crime: they distributed water, translated, took the wheel, asked for rescue by satellite phone. The sentence: often several years in prison, sometimes even for life.
We will provide information and discuss the human rights and political dimensions dimensions of the current development.
The actress Bettina Franke will read from My Way over the Pyrenees by Lisa Fittko, who was active as an escape helper during the Nazi dictatorship.
An event organized by Bündnis Sicherer Hafen Mannheim in cooperation with Medico International e.V., de:criminalize e.V. and Mannheimer Abendakademie, supported by the City of Mannheim's Refugee Fund.
