Vigil on the Theodor Heuss Bridge ️

05.07.2025 14:00 — 16:00 Uhr

Heidelberg, Theodor-Heuss-Brücke

At least 31,766 people have drowned in the Mediterranean since 2014 and thousands more are drowning every year. However, there has been no state-organized sea rescue since 2014. This was a deliberate decision based on political calculations: people should die in order to deter other potential refugees.

Civilian sea rescue organizations are opposing this deadly and racist policy. They are a thorn in the side of Europe's right-wing governments, which is why they respond to the life-saving work of sea rescuers with criminal proceedings. But sea rescue is not a crime! Sea rescue is a duty!

With the vigil, we remember the deaths in the Mediterranean. We remember all the people who have died while fleeing. With paper boats that we attach to the Theodor Heuss Bridge, we make our solidarity with all people on the run and with all sea rescuers visible.

We will also provide information about our campaign Mensch lässt Mensch nicht ertrinken! Your donation helps! The work of civilian sea rescue organizations is expensive, they receive no state funding and are dependent on donations. Anyone who has some money to spare can make a donation to a sea rescue organization to help secure their life-saving work. With this campaign, we want to make a contribution together with Heidelberg's civil society by sponsoring a ship for Sea-Eye with a monthly donation.

Come along to the vigil, fold a paper boat and make a statement against dying in the Mediterranean!

️ The event is part of our donation campaign "Don't let people drown - your donation helps!". With this campaign, we want to raise awareness of the issue of sea rescue and motivate people to support the sea rescue organization Sea-Eye with a monthly donation.
