A thousand kilometers from the Mediterranean, the desert city of Agadez becomes an outpost of European migration policy. The nomadic Tuareg have been transporting people across the desert here for centuries - until new laws declare them to be smugglers. Germany and Europe are investing millions in local security, while the USA is deploying drones. But what good are border controls without economic prospects for the people? A mayor, a journalist and a trader tell the story - until a military coup in 2023 changes everything.
