February 19 marks the sixth anniversary of the right-wing extremist terrorist attack in Hanau. Ten people were murdered for racist motives: Sedad Gürbüz, Gökhan Gültekin, Said Nesar Hashemi, Mercedes Kierpacz, Hamza Kurtović, Kaloyan Velkov, Vili Viorel Păun, Fatih Saraçoğlu and Ferhat Unvar. This year 2026 - the Hanau survivor Ibrahim Akkuş died at the age of 70 on January 10, 2026 from the late effects of right-wing extremist terror.
We call on all political and civil society organizations as well as all people who are clearly committed to anti-fascism, solidarity and an open society to take to the streets together. We want to show our solidarity with the families of those murdered in their ongoing fight for clarification, consequences and justice - and together make it clear that racist violence and misanthropic ideologies have no place.
At a time when authoritarian, racist and ethnic-nationalist positions are gaining influence worldwide and their narratives are becoming increasingly normalized in society - including in politics and parts of the media landscape - it is all the more important to visibly stand up for a different society. A society based on solidarity, equality and collective responsibility. A society in which remembrance means drawing consequences.
