The EU is responding to the rapid increase in refugee movements worldwide by "securing" its borders. This serves to protect us, according to the justification for border controls, walls, fences and illegal pushbacks. In reality, however, restrictive border regimes lead to the atrophy of democratic society. Because those who live behind walls are determined by them. Political scientist Volker Heins will analyze how and why the rejection of migrants influences society, undermines the rule of law and endangers democratic values. Heins will also take a look at US (re)migration policy.
